Stock Market Investment Strategies 2018
January 1st, 2018

Stock market investors must develop an action plan to maximize investment opportunities while minimized losses, advises GorillaTrades.com.

A well-devised plan should follow a few basic guidelines, according to GorillaTrades.com:

  • Be patient when entering new trades as some stocks will show returns over time
  • Reduce trade risk after a “confirmation day” or time that marks a combination of significant volume and price action
  • Spread out the portfolio's capital to avoid large capital losses
  • Consider dollar cost averaging “up”, which involves purchasing shares of a security at successively higher prices, thus reducing the risk incurred by investing a large amount in a single investment
  • Pay only the price that coincides with your exit strategy; consider bidding for stocks.
Immediately assign an exit strategy to each trade you make.

Career Corner:
When the Going Gets Tough... Be Patient
January 1st, 2018

Being unemployed can be an incredibly disheartening experience. The average job search takes a lot longer than it used to. Many Americans have thrown in the towel after searching for a few months with no avail. There are ways to maintain your positive attitude throughout the process.

Sara Murray of the Wall Street Journal reports that Americans are on average ending their job search after about five months of unemployment. This means that millions of people are on the sidelines and are thus not being counted in the unemployment rate. These people still take a heavily negative toll on the economy and are still very much in need of a job. It’s easy to become discouraged after an extensive period of time with no success, especially if you know others who are facing the same circumstances. It is important that you don’t give up hope.

Curt Rosengren of US News has provided some tips as to how to maintain your sanity during a job search. You should get yourself into a daily routine and stay active. This routine should include exercise. Exercise will fend off stress and give you the energy and endurance necessary to move past defeats. Your routine should also include surrounding yourself with positive people who you can reach out to for support. These people can inject fun into your life and may be able to encourage you to persevere even when you feel like giving up.

You should also focus your efforts inward and engage in meditation, it’s a great way to help you feel grounded. If you don’t feel like meditation is for you consider keeping a journal. Write down what you are thankful for and what is positive in your life. Reminding yourself of what’s good in your life can fend off depression. These journals can also help you to focus on the big picture and what really matters to you in life. You should also take stock of what makes you so great; remind yourself of your positive attributes. You’ll need to be able to sell yourself in a job interview and this self analysis can help you to present yourself as a cohesive and desirable package to a potential employer.

Management Matters:
You Want To Be A Good Boss But, Do You Need To Be Harsh?
January 1st, 2018

Every manager has to work hard to balance maintaining a nurturing environment with maintaining a certain level of authority. It is by no means an easy task. Most managers fear that if their employees get too comfortable they make take advantage of the easy going environment and slack off. At the same time most managers don’t want to have to be really cut throat all of the time.

It is important that as a manager, you realize that even if your team has done a great job hiring and training and getting to know somebody it is possible that this person simply will not be able or willing to do the job asked of him as it needs to be done. It is a lot easier to deal with this situation if this person is difficult to work with or is simply lazy. You won’t feel bad letting them go and they aren’t as likely to put up a fight. But it is of course also possible that this person will quickly get along with the rest of the office and works diligently but they just aren’t a good fit for the position. No matter how much coaching you give this person they may not be able to do things as you need them to. If this is the case the only solution is to help find them a new position, that position may be within your company or more likely it will be with a different employer.

Firing people is a natural part of being a good manager. Often people get fired for the wrong reasons, these bosses aren’t good bosses. But that does not mean that by firing somebody you are being a bad boss. There are legitimate reasons to let even a hard worker go.

So do you need to be harsh or cut throat to be a good boss? The answer: it depends on what you consider harsh. If you think it is harsh to fire somebody who isn’t right for the job but is in all other ways a good employee then the answer is yes. But in all reality firing somebody who cannot perform and excel at the necessary functions of their job is not unethical, unfair, or mean.
