High-speed Internet subscriptions are soaring as more
than 50.2 million lines were added in the United States
in 2005 – a jump of 33% over the previous year,
according to the Federal Communications Commission.
Figures for 2006 also indict the trend is continuing
as the Pew Internet & American Life Project reports
that an estimated 42% of Americans had high-speed Internet
access at home in March 2006. That was up from 30% of
Americans with high-speed access one year earlier, according
to an article from Reuters news service.
The FCC also reports that more consumers signed up for
digital subscriber line service from telephone companies
than cable modem service providers, states the report
from Reuters.
DSL subscriptions rose to 5.7 million lines in 2005,
in comparison to cable companies’ 4.2 million new
subscribers, according to FCC figures cited in the article.
The United States is ranked 12th in the world for broadband
subscribers behind countries including Iceland, South
Korea and Japan, according to Reuters, citing figures
from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
