Medical Device industry supports physician performance
measures
Physician performance measures in dozens of clinical
areas will improve the quality of care, according to
industry medical device executives.
The Medical Device Management Association announced
in February its support of approximately 140 physician
performance measures in 34 clinical areas.
Under the measure approved by the American Medical Association
and Congress, doctors would report efforts to improve
quality of care to the federal government. The pact came
as an effort to push pay-for-performance arrangements
with various health care providers in order to publicize
their performance and link Medicare payment to quality,
according to the Medical Device Management Association’s
Web site.
However, according to some critics, the timeline given
to develop the performance measures is too short. Critics
also urged that the performance measures need to be developed
by specialty societies, then tested and validated to
determine their true effect on patient care.
The AMA recently sent a letter to specialty physicians
stating that the AMA has not agreed to a pay-for-performance
system without accompanying changes in Medicare reimbursement.
“(Medical Device Management Association) supports
efforts to develop quality measures in health care. However,
given the lack of current uniform performance measures
related to quality, it is premature to move forward with
gainsharing arrangements that claim to be able to limit
physician choice without compromising quality.” said
Mark B. Leahey, MDMA executive director. “If we
can’t agree on how to measure quality, how can
we be assured patients won’t be harmed under gainsharing?”
